Yes, yes it is. Fallout 3 is very faithful to the Fallout universe - a post-apocalyptic future as envisioned through the lens of 1950s American culture. The game map is massive and setting the game in Washington D.C. leads to some very cool scenery, especially around the National Mall.
I prefer the first-person RPG gameplay to the top-view 2D style of the older Fallout games, although I would have liked the combat to be more first-person shooter-based than statistically determined RPG-style when you aren't using the V.A.T.S. targeting system.
The only real knock I have against the game is that the story feels unfinished, although part of that is a result of some paths being restricted based on your karma level and I haven't played through a second time with bad karma yet. The multiple endings aren't as detailed as they were in the original games, so you don't get the same satisfaction based on the choices you make as the story progresses.
Overall the game is definitely a lot of fun and well worth playing.
Did you blow up Megaton or diffuse the bomb?
I diffused the bomb, but I'm working on a second run as an evil character so I'm going to blow it up this time.
Apparently the reward for doing so is pretty high class.
