There's so much unbelievably great stuff on these two sets alone. The SNME disc brings back tons of memories, because I used to spend Saturday nights with my dad's parents as a younger chap, and I'd watch the Main Event shows, with my grandmother telling me how I shouldn't watch all that violent wrestling stuff, and my grandfather watching it with me, and how he'd call Jake Roberts "Snake Man" long before Ultimate Warrior thought it was cool to do.

And as I pay attention to the internet wrestling community, I know the cool kids immediately shoot for street cred by boo-hooing that such and such match or extra isn't included. I hate that bullshit; now, that being said, if I could have one thing included on the Main Event disc, it would be the interview that the Twin Towers gave on Arsenio Hall's show the night prior to their match with the Mega Powers. When Arsenio asks Akeem about his African heritage pales only in comparison to the moment when Arsenio asks Bossman how it felt when Hulk Hogan "was whipping yo' ass." TV gold.

That Starrcade set looks awesome. I suppose for historical accuracy the Hogan/Piper and Goldberg/Nash matches have to be included and there isn't a single match on there that doesn't make up for those two abortions. Everything else looks like Standard Fucking Awesome.

I had to Wiki the BattleBowl from 1991 to see what that was and if I recall correctly it has the funniest battle royale elimination ever. Ricky Steamboat headscissors Rick Rude over the top rope, but momentum carries Steamboat over as well. Steamboat does his patented maneuver where he catches the top rope to pull himself back into the ring, but Rude recovers and grabs Steamboat's waistband, pulling Steamboat to the floor. Rude then hits Steamboat with a Rude Awakening on the concrete and spits on him. The entire spot happens very quickly and I remember laughing my ass of at it when I saw it some years later.

The SNME disc seems to be a solid mix of Good Shit and silly WWF stuff that was probably hilarious then but doesn't hold up well. The original Hart Foundation; Randy Savage, Jake Roberts, and Mr. Perfect in their late 80s-early 90s prime; some young Undertaker and the Rockers; that's all some very watchable stuff.

On the silly shit side of things, I'm curious about what the "Andre passes out" segment is/was, as listed on "Disc 2."

And to add to your discussion about the nature of Wikipedia, I was looking for info on the Perfect/Santana match for the IC belt, and I'm now the more wiser for knowing that the IC belt has been vacated a surprising eight times (not including its unification a few years ago).

Rev. Joshua said...

Let me see if I can remember the vacated IC titles off the top of my head:

Pedro Morales in the late 70s/early 80s after winning the World Title; Warrior at WM VI after winning the World Title; Shawn Michaels suspended for "steroids"/contract dispute; Jeff Jarrett in a "feud" with Savio Vega; Steve Austin refuses to defend against the Rock. I can't think of anything more recent than that.

Wikipedia says: Morales did not vacate the IC (but he did have to vacate the Tag Title because his partner was then-World Champion Bob Backlund and the World Champion could not hold a second title concurrently). Warrior did vacate due to the World Title win. Shawn Michaels vacated because he did not defend within 30 days, but the "real" reason was a steroid suspension that Michaels maintains was bogus and knowing Michaels and McMahon it was probably a money/contract issue. Jeff Jarrett vacated in a dispute with Bob Holly; Goldust was the one that vacated in a dispute with Savio Vega. Ahmed Johnson vacated due to injury (surprise, surprise. YUH GUN DUN! YUH GUN DUN!) Austin vacated his first IC run due to injury after the Owen-Driver, but it says Austin handed the title to the Rock to end his second run. If I recall correctly, Austin threw the belt into a river which is technically not the same as handing it over and McMahon awarded the Rock the IC. Triple H vacated due to injury. Edge vacated due to injury, but that's after I quit watching.

Nate said...

I was pretty surprised to find out how many times that thing was vacated for injury. And I thought the Michaels vacate was the infamous "lost my smile" moment.

Nate said...

As soon as I submitted this response, I recalled that this was in fact the aftermath of the exceptional angle where Owen Hart enziguiri'd Michaels in the head & he collapsed after the match to the stunned looks of the masses.

That would put this vacating of the IC title around the time of Michaels getting beaten up by a few guys while he slept in a car that was parked outside a (gay?) bar.

Rev. Joshua said...

Michaels vacated the World Title because he lost his smile in 1997. He vacated the IC title in 1993, which led to Razor Ramon's first IC run and the first-ever WWF Ladder Match upon Michaels' return. The barfight and Owen's enziguiri was 1995.
