The new face of the Tennessee GOP

Are you sitting down?

I agree with Josh on a political issue. This guy, who is the new TN House member from Kingsport, is the closest thing to Josh's typical description of the GOP. This guy probably won't win re-election, because he is an idiot. He is the worst kind of idiot....one who is an idiot but thinks he is actually smart and important. His story can be found here.

Walter Willard would never let that shit fly.

But I could totally see this coming to pass in the Kingsport monarchy, under the reign of "Biggun" Beau James.

I don't know if the punchline to this story is that Rep. Shipley thinks he can redefine the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution from the state level or that he thinks that this law could be applied to non-citizens without resulting in some sort of legal clusterfuck. Buck and I were discussing this and he made a good point about how the difference between "reasonable suspicion" and "probable cause" is pretty much worthless anyway. You have to convince a judge to sign off on a search warrant and either you have a reason to execute a search or you don't.

And I can't really see this kind of dumbassery putting off the voters of Kingsport or really anywhere in Tennessee given the Republican stronghold the state has become.

Well, Kingsport did elect a Democrat to this position in 2004 and 2006.

Fair enough, considering that the Republican gains in 2008 may have simply been a knee-jerk backlash against the obvious Democratic ascendency. I don't, however, think there is much doubt that certain areas, of which Tennessee is one, are more susceptible to poorly-thought out attempts to gird against terrorist infiltration.
